Singaporeans Living the
Expat Lifestyle in JB

A Young Couple's Dream of Living like Expats

As a couple in our early 30s, my husband and I have been considering the Malaysia My Second Home visa as a way to start our family in JB. Living across the Causeway seems like the perfect option for us, because with our condo in Singapore fully paid for, we're able to rent it out and probably fetch around S$4k per month. When converted to Ringgit, this rental income would provide us with great spending power and quite a comfortable lifestyle in JB.

In fact, we've done the calculations and we found that by moving to JB, we'll be able to afford quite a spacious home, possibly even landed. We believe that this extra living space is something our kids would really enjoy. Not to mention less pressure.

Plus, it's no secret that the MM2H visa offers a range of financial benefits, including tax exemptions on income from outside of Malaysia. Obviously, this is perfect for us, since we plan to live off our rental income. So we'd be able to remit this money from our Singapore bank account to our Malaysia bank every month, without the Ringgit getting taxed.

Actually, our SGX investments are also doing quite well. They won't make us rich lah, but the dividends can nicely supplement our spending power in Malaysia. Of course, we also have to thank the SGD/MYR rate for the much greater disposable income in JB. Anyway, if you add up all these monetary benefits, we'll be able to enjoy an expat-like lifestyle in JB. Quite shiok right? Well, it's this that's made us rethink if we really should just stay put in Singapore or go for MM2H and live more in more comfort.

Rare Opportunity

Well, with the rising cost of living, we're beginning to feel that at least not trying would be a waste of a rare opportunity. I mean, how hard can it be? We'd move a stone's throw away from where we are now, like, literally less 10 kilometers from our own Singapore home! And we'd be so much better off after the move. Or, alternatively, do we just remain in Singapore and let this chance pass us by?

But the idea of living in JB is appealing not just for the financial benefits, but also for the general lifestyle. We really like the idea of enjoying the less stressed way of life in JB. Besides, with RTS soon to be completed, it'll be super easy to hop back to Singapore whenever we feel like it, for example for a family visit or to go for drinks with our friends. Actually, we really think RTS will be a game-changer. It wouldn't surprise us if a lot more Singaporeans decide to live across the Causeway. So better we beat the rush, before properties in JB shoot up in price...

And when you think about it, the cultural similarities between Malaysia and Singapore also mean that we'll never feel out of place. The food, language, even our TV channels are the same. Especially with the nice JB malls and the growing Singapore community, JB is already becoming a bit like a "Little Singapore". But apart from that, we also look forward to the opportunity to raise our kids in a mixed society, where they can experience different cultures and make friends with other expats and, especially, enjoy a life with lesser pressure. It looks like being in JB is the best of both worlds.

But why the MM2H visa? Can't you stay there with the 30-day chop we get? Actually, the MM2H visa allows you to settle in Malaysia with peace of mind, knowing that you're there legally and have a long-term visa to your name. We know quite a few Singaporeans that have been enjoying their second home in JB on their 30-day social pass chop, but we believe that having the MM2H visa is a more secure and sustainable option.

Safe and Sound
MM2H allows you to stay in Malaysia without worrying about having to do repeated visa runs, or about accidentally overstaying, or possibly even getting blacklisted, which we believe may start happening once the RTS is running. I mean let's face it, we go to JB, at least in part to relax. Last thing you want is worry about immigration issues every time you arrive at CIQ. MM2H is piece of mind. And it's not even that hard to get anyway.

All in all, my husband and I feel that the MM2H visa offers us the opportunity to achieve our dream of living in a nice big home, hopefully a landed, where we can start our family and live quite well, all whilst maintaining a close connection to Singapore. It's an exciting prospect and the more we think about it, the more we can't wait to go for it.
